Personal Track Safety (PTS) – DCCR Initial: Practical

Course Overview:

The Personal Track Safety (PTS) DCCR – Initial: Practical Course is designed for individuals seeking to work within the railway industry. This course provides comprehensive training on the safety protocols and procedures required when working on or near railway tracks.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognise the Unique Dangers of DC Rails: Understand the specific hazards associated with DC conductor rails, including electrical risks and the importance of maintaining safe distances.
  2. Identify Conductor Rail Infrastructure & Signage: Learn to identify DC-specific signage, third-rail positioning, and related safety equipment, ensuring hazard zones are understood.
  3. Apply Safe Methods of Movement and Crossing: Demonstrate correct techniques for working around or crossing conductor rails, using approved crossing points and safe step-over procedures.
  4. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Correctly: Select, inspect, and maintain the correct PPE required for DC rail environments, ensuring compliance with railway standards.
  5. Employ Emergency & Incident Procedures: Understand emergency protocols, including how to report incidents, respond to electrical or personal accidents, and initiate safe isolation where required.

Course Content:

Introduction to DC Conductor Rails

  • Overview of the DC rail network and its operation
  • Electrical principles specific to conductor rail systems

Hazards and Risk Awareness

  • The high-voltage nature of third rails (750V DC and above)
  • Arc flash and step/touch potential hazards
  • Hazard identification and mitigation strategies

Railway Terminology & Layout

  • Key terms associated with DC conductor rail systems
  • Recognition of third-rail infrastructure and signage

Safe Systems of Work

  • Establishing and following safe work boundaries
  • Lookout-operated warning systems vs. engineering protections
  • Approved methods for crossing or stepping over conductor rails

Use of PPE in DC Environments

  • DC-specific PPE requirements (insulated tools, protective footwear, etc.)
  • Inspection, maintenance, and correct usage

Emergency Protocols & Reporting

  • Isolating the conductor rail in an emergency
  • Reporting incidents and near-misses
  • Incident response responsibilities

Practical Exercises and Assessments

  • Hands-on practice in identifying hazards and demonstrating safe crossing techniques
  • Group exercises to reinforce emergency response skills

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for:

  • Individuals seeking to work on or near DC conductor rail systems for the first time
  • Current railway employees who need the DC endorsement or refresher training
  • Contractors and subcontractors whose work areas include DC electrified tracks

Certification:

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a PTS DCCR Certificate, valid for two years. This certification confirms competence in working safely on or near DC conductor rails and is recognized across the UK railway industry.
