Who Needs a Green CSCS Card?

The Green CSCS Card is aimed at individuals entering construction without formal trade qualifications. Here’s what you need to know:

• Age Requirement: You must be at least 16 years old.
• Basic Health & Safety Training: You’re not required to hold an NVQ or other advanced qualification. Instead, you must complete an approved Level 1 Health & Safety course—commonly the CITB Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) one-day course or the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in Construction Environment.
• CITB HS&E Test: All applicants must pass the basic CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test within the last two years.

This card is perfect for those who are new to construction work, demonstrating that you have the essential safety training required on site.

How to Apply for a Green CSCS Card: Step-by-Step

Follow these steps to secure your Green CSCS Card quickly and efficiently:

1. Complete a Level 1 Health & Safety Course
Enroll in an approved one-day Health & Safety course. These courses cover the basic principles you need to know for working safely on construction sites. (If you’d like more information on available courses, check out our training page.)

2. Pass the CITB HS&E Operatives Test
Book your CITB test at one of over 150 approved test centres nationwide. The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that you have 45 minutes to complete. You must score at least 45 correct answers (90% pass mark) to succeed. The test fee is approximately £22.50. Use official CITB revision materials or our recommended practice tests to prepare.

3. Gather Your Documents
Prepare digital copies of the following:
• Your Level 1 Health & Safety course certificate
• Your CITB test pass confirmation (including your test ID)
• A valid photo ID (if required by the application process)

CITB Test Details for the Green Card

The CITB HS&E test is central to your application:

• Test Content: You’ll be tested on general safety topics like working at heights, manual handling, and hazard recognition.

• Test Format: It’s a computer-based exam with 50 questions in 45 minutes.

• Preparation Tip: Even though the questions are straightforward, ensure you review the safety topics thoroughly. Using practice tests can help reinforce your knowledge and boost your confidence.

Validity and Renewal

• Validity: Your Green CSCS Card is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

• Renewal: Before your card expires, you must: Retake the CITB HS&E test (to ensure your safety knowledge is up to date).

Note: The Level 1 qualification you obtained is lifetime valid and does not need to be repeated, although the test does.

If you progress in your career and gain an NVQ or additional qualifications, you may choose to upgrade to a higher-level card (such as a Blue CSCS Card). For more information, see our Blue CSCS Card Guide.
